June 2023 Fishing Report
We fished out of Cleveland today and fishing was good. We made the move from the islands to Cleveland a few weeks back. Since then, there has been a good school of fish in front of Cleveland. We fish out of Gordon Park. We left the ramp at 6:30 and came in when the rain picked up around 11:00. We had to sort through a lot of shorts, but there were keepers mixed in. Roughly two shorts for every keeper. We fished 48’-52’ of water, east of the crib. We drifted, but kicked on the trolling motor when the lake would lay down. 0.8 mph seemed to be the sweet spot whether drifting or using the trolling motor. Tried swing casting, but had better luck with baits near the bottom. Harnesses caught most of the fish, but Erie Dearies caught fish too. Bait didn’t seem to make a difference on keepers compared to shorts. We caught one sheep head. Talked to some guys at the ramp, and the results were similar. Going deeper didn’t seem to decrease the number of shorts.Trollers seemed to catch a little faster than drifting.
Best part of this trip was getting fish with my brother-in-law and nephew. He even caught his first Lake Erie walleye all on his own. He caught it on an ‘Old Fashioned on the Rocks’ harness with a one oz. weight. A good morning on the lake.
